Susan Fullerton Recognized by ORAU for Research by Junior Faculty

Susan Fullerton was awarded a 2016 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). 

This is an outstanding accomplishment for a young faculty member, and so we are very proud of Susan’s award,” noted Steven Little, PhD, the William Kepler Whiteford Professor and Department Chair of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. “The Powe Award is very competitive, and it speaks highly of Susan to receive this during her first year at Pitt.”

William Stanchina Receives MCSI Award

The external advisory committee of the University of Pittsburgh’s Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI) has awarded four faculty members with research seed grants totaling $190,630 for the 2016/2017 year.

This year’s recipients include PQI faculty William Stanchina for his proposal on "β- Ga2O3 Nanoelectronics: A Path to a Sustainable Semiconductor Technology for High Efficiency Electricity Conversion from Renewables."

Paul Leu Recieves NSF-CAREER Award for his Work on Flexible Metals

PQI faculty Paul W. Leu is the recipient of the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award, a prestigious award for junior faculty who exemplify outstanding research, teaching, and their integration. The five-year, $500,000 award will support research into the manipulation of metals at the micro- and nanoscale to develop thin yet flexible crystalline silicon for high efficiency, low cost solar cells. 

Ted Corcovilos Recieves 2015 Kaufman Foundation Investigator Award

The Kaufman Foundation announced on Wednesday that it is awarding about $2 million through 10 grants to researchers at six universities. In the New Investigator Research category, a grant of $150,000 over two years was awarded to Theodore Corcovilos for research on “Experimental quantum emulation of two-dimensional topological insulators and Majorana fermions using ultra-cold atoms”.

Sergey Frolov and Vincent Liu Receive Kaufman Foundation Inaugural Award

The Charles E. Kaufman Foundation, part of The Pittsburgh Foundation, today announced its first series of grants – amounting to almost $1.6 million – to support cutting-edge scientific research at institutions across the State of Pennsylvania.

A New Initiative grant was awarded to Sergey M. Frolov and W. Vincent Liu, who receive $242,310 over two years ($121,155 per year) for research on “Topological Quantum Wire Emulators.”

Paul Leu Receives Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Achievement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities

PQI faculty Paul W. Leu is a recipient of the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Achievement Award. The awards provide seed money for research by junior faculty at  Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) member institutions. These awards are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities.
