2023 Q-PHORIA: Quantum Pennsylvania Ohio Regional Annual Conference

PQI will host the first Q-PHORIA: Quantum Pennsylvania Ohio Regional Annual Conference on October 5th and 6th, 2023.

Organizers:  Shubhayu Chatterjee, Ribhu Kaul, Yuanming Lu, Roger Mong, and PQI

The goal of this conference is to bring condensed matter, quantum information and AMO physicists from geographically proximate institutions in the greater Pennsylvania and Ohio region together in the city of Pittsburgh, to forge new collaborations and stimulate existing ones. The recent years have seen significant new faculty hires in ‘quantum physics’ in many of these universities, and bringing people together in the same room will not only allow for a vibrant exchange of ideas, but also pave the path towards sustained cumulative efforts to solve pressing problems in the discipline. In addition to talks by faculty, an essential part will be short talks and posters presented by postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, enabling them to showcase their research as well as connect with each other and with faculty, thereby building professional networks crucial to their careers.

In the pilot edition, the participating institutions include University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Ohio State University, and Penn State University, with focus on quantum condensed matter theory. The confirmed speakers include (a) Prof. Roger Mong (Pitt), (b) Prof. Grigory Tarnopolsky (CMU), (c) Prof. Ilya Gruzberg (OSU) and (d) Prof. Jainendra Jain (PSU, Oliver E. Buckley Prize awardee), highlighting the diversity in experience and interests. Long term, we aim to make this an annual fixture, with a gradual increase in scope via reaching out to our experimental colleagues, and by expanding participation via involving more neighboring institutions with research or teaching focus. A conference like this would build a strong local quantum community and foster a rapid growth of collaborative research activities in the quantum sciences.
